Superfood. We have been hearing this buzz word for years and it’s becoming more and more popular and regularly referenced in the field of science and health. Since the term first came into our collective consciousness it’s often mentioned by athletes, nutritionists and it even now appears on menus wherever you go such like ‘superfood salad’ or ‘superfood smoothie’.
But what exactly is a superfood? A superfood is loosely and condensely described as any food rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals or antioxidants. Even a combination of all of the above in one go. Superfoods can help improve our physical and mental health, and quite literally make us feel SUPER!
The question here is....why are we eating these superfoods...and why now?
The answer feels simple. Life is fast, and we don’t grow food like we used to. The combination of the global food network and modern farming practices means that we simply don’t get the nutrients we used to even as close as 50 years ago. The reality is, that’s the way things are now. Life. Is. Moving. Fast.
On top of this, we work more hours and have more demands on us than our predecessors did, we are also living longer than ever. We need to take care of our bodies in every way possible, at every opportunity. You can ask any PT or dietitian and they will give you all roughly the same answer. A healthy body and mind needs movement, care of mental health, nutrient dense food for fuel, water, and fresh air. We should seek to incorporate these practises and activities as much as possible into our life’s to not only improve how long we live, but the quality in which we live that life.
Self care can admittedly be...time consuming? This is why we need to seek out micro practises whereby we can improve our life with tiny habits, but get maximum benefits in a short window of time. This is where superfoods come in. A handful of blueberries are not only a delicious snack, but they also are one of the highest nutrient dense fruits on the market which can improve your cognitive function, heart health and have proven anti inflammatory properties. All of that from a handful on your morning porridge? You can find superfoods without looking far, and they aren’t hard to incorporate into your every day living without even noticing.
Sea Moss as a second example can support your immunity, thyroid functions, energy levels, brain health, digestive health, brain health and the list goes on! It’s worth a google. Your jaw may drop and you might then be asking yourself why you’ve waited so long to incorporate a spoonful of Sea Moss a day into your normal morning routine, given the benefits? One spoonful and that’s one good thing you’ve done for yourself ticked off the list. Before you’ve walked out the door your body is boosted for the day, and your body WILL thank you for it especially when you start to see and feel the results over time.
So we circle back to the question and the word that is everyone’s lips right now...superfoods, why bother?
Our answer would be...since they are so easy to find and incorporate into our every life, why not?
It’s a win-win situation, and you deserve to feel super!
